![]() ![]() Since stages are somewhat different you can spend more time looking for new secrets and using Ray’s and Mighty’s abilities to find new areas. Plus doesn’t do anything crazy but the new Encore mode twists things a little while Mighty and Ray gives a lot to the gameplay. It was a great feeling to pop this game in and get started. I was shocked to find this at my doorstep the day prior and was able to stream it on Twitch a day early. The Encore mode is like the “hard” mode for Sonic Mania and I love it! There are new locations for rings in the Encore mode, new minigame section that is a Pinball Machine, and the Chaos Emeralds are now much harder. He glides through the air but you have to push left and right to make him go up and down. Ray on the other hand I like to think is like having the cap in Super Mario World. It makes some bosses and stages really easy since he isn’t affected by anything. Mighty is an interesting character as he plays just like Sonic but has a infinite shield as objects will bounce off him. You can read my other review for a more basic gameplay since this section will be about Mighty and Ray. If you want a more in-depth about Story and Gameplay you can read my original review: Click Here! You are tasked with freeing either Mighty or Ray and the one you don’t pick turns into a Hard Boiled Heavy and the adventure starts exactly how the original starts. The DLC doesn’t go to far beyond the original but has a new opening. Going to be fairly short so just check out the full review! Sonic Mania Plus – Nintendo Switch – Released: 7/17/18 – $5 (DLC)/$30 (Physical) If you spot any major malfunctions making it impossible to read the content, however, please let us know at editor AT way to end a on a high note for the big 200! This content has recently been ported from its original home on The Iris and may have formatting errors – images may not be showing up, or duplicated, and galleries may not be working. Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC Lowlights: May not be enough extra content to justify a rebuy for anyone who bought the base gameĭeveloper: Christian Whitehead, PagodaWest Games, Headcannon Highlights: Same great game, but with extra content Mighty OP I live in hope that every game we love and remember from our childhood might receive an update as deft and purposeful as this. Sonic Mania Plus remains a work of obvious care and astounding attention to detail. There’s nothing here that impinges on or diminishes the quality of what was already there, just more of an already good thing. It’s all gravy on what was already a stellar experience. All of this new content is wrapped up in what is the game’s first formal physical release - complete with reversible cover art featuring a Mega Drive era mock-up. A 4-player competitive mode has also been added for those who fondly remember the racing multiplayer from Sonic 3 and even the old Pinball Bonus Level is back in action. The updated version of the game also includes the Encore Mode DLC that gives every level in the game a further refresh to both accommodate for the new characters, as well as adding a handful of new gameplay mechanics and difficulty hurdles for more experienced players. Ray’s moveset is all about gliding - he can leap high into the air and glide to reach higher platforms in a manner very similar to the Tanuki suit in Super Mario Bros. Mighty is capable of performing a massive ground-pound attack and is immune to spikes while rolling, making him wildly overpowered in the opinion of this lifelong Sonic fan. Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel have appeared in Sonic games before - Mighty’s most notable showing was in the Sega 32X spin-off Knuckles’ Chaotix while Ray had previously only appeared in the arcade-only title SegaSonic the Hedgehog in 1993 alongside Sonic and, funnily enough, Mighty.īoth Mighty and Ray come with a suite skills all their own. So what is new in Sonic Mania Plus? There are two new characters added to the roster, taking the total of playable characters to five. This review piece will be about what’s new in Sonic Mania Plus, the game’s first big content update since launch. I’ve written this all already and you can read that review here if you like. It was the kind of modern update that walks an incredibly fine line, paying homage to what came before and pushing the property forward in a meaningful way. I found it to be a breath of fresh air in a series comprehensively and aggressively starved of it for decades. ![]() Look, I reviewed Sonic Mania when it launched last year.
